Integrated Inside-Out Fast Feet — 7.62–7.65

Integrated Inside-Out Fast Feet — 7.62–7.65

Exercise instructions and progressions from Advanced Concepts of Strength & Conditioning for Tennis, Edition 2.

Video Demonstration

This is a modified variation II movement reference: the forehand is simulated and no ball is fed. The written progressions specify the actual catch, feed and target tasks. The visible rings are optional landing references. The clip exits before the last square of the full ladder shown; it does not verify the prescribed terminal-square crossover and exit.

Setup And Execution

I — 7.62: place the ladder on a firm surface where it will not slide and stand sideways just before its first square. Use the Inside-Out Fast Feet route from 7.34: step the leading foot and then the trailing foot into each square. At the last square, cross the trailing foot behind the leading leg. Push off that trailing foot and move diagonally forward out of the ladder, landing on the leading foot. The coach feeds one tennis ball toward the final-square area. Catch it after the exit and throw it back to the coach. I uses no racquet.

Look down toward the ladder contacts in I. Locate the fed ball as you leave the ladder, keep the landing under control and complete the catch and return before resetting. Rehearse the footwork without a feed if the athlete cannot connect the rear crossover to a stable diagonal landing. Practise both lead-foot versions of the route.

II — 7.63: retain the same ladder sequence, rear crossover and diagonal exit, with downward gaze during the ladder movement. Hold a racquet and hit an inside-out forehand from the coach’s single feed instead of catching and throwing the ball.

III — 7.64: retain the racquet, feed and footwork but look forward toward the opposite baseline during the ladder traverse.

IV — 7.65: mark a target area with four cones, visually track the coach during the approach and hit the fed inside-out forehand into that target.

Time the feed to the player’s arrival at the last square. Reduce movement speed or feed pace when the ball arrives before the player can exit and establish the hitting position. Keep the crossover at the final square rather than inserting it into every ladder contact. A shot that succeeds after missed contacts does not complete the prescribed footwork task.

The linked video shows downward-gaze ladder movement, a diagonal exit into two rings and a simulated forehand without a feed. It is a modified II reference for the movement route. The ready photograph and movement frames come from separate demonstrations. The source equipment lists require the ladder and tennis balls, adding a racquet in II–IV and four target cones in IV; the pictured rings are optional landing references. Use the written progression for the catch, actual feed and target tasks.

Progressions

7.62 — Inside-Out Fast Feet I

Learn the diagonal exit while receiving a fed ball by hand and throwing it back to the coach.

7.63 — Inside-Out Fast Feet II: Racquet

Retain downward-gaze ladder movement and the diagonal exit, then hit a fed inside-out forehand.

7.64 — Inside-Out Fast Feet III

Perform the integrated forehand sequence with forward gaze during the ladder movement.

7.65 — Inside-Out Fast Feet IV: Target

Track the coach during the ladder movement, complete the diagonal exit and hit an inside-out forehand toward a marked target.
