7-Deuce Drill links two baseline side-step contacts with a diagonal approach into the deuce-side service box. Original exercises 7.254–7.257.

7-Deuce Drill: numbered agility-ring route with the athlete facing the net

Coaching Demonstration

Philipp Halfmann explains the route and Alexander Ritschard demonstrates the 7-Deuce drill. Follow the numbered setup and variation-specific gaze instructions below.

Setup And Route

Place three flat agility rings: ring 1 on the deuce side of the baseline, ring 2 on the ad side, and ring 3 in the deuce service box. Begin at centre baseline facing the net. Side-step to ring 1 and plant the right foot; push off that foot and side-step to ring 2 for a left-foot contact. Push off and sprint diagonally to ring 3. Control the single-foot contact before changing direction.

Four Progressions

I — 7.254: no racquet or ball feed. Finish with a left-foot plant on hard court or a controlled left-foot lunge-slide on clay. II — 7.255: retain that route while carrying a racquet; no ball feed or stroke is prescribed.

III — 7.256: the coach feeds one ball toward ring 3; approach and play a counter drop-shot. Retain the left-foot hard-court contact or controlled left-foot clay lunge-slide. IV — 7.257: retain the ball-fed task and direct the counter drop-shot into a defined target.

Target Scoring

IV requires at least 30% of shots in the target and three bounces before the drop-shot passes the service line. Record target hits and total attempts, and record the bounce condition separately. These are drill criteria, not validated readiness thresholds. Define the deuce-side target with two to four markers. Keep the target boundaries and feed conditions consistent between attempts.

Coaching Priorities

Place the contacting foot in the ring centre and push off from that foot. Establish the baseline route and surface-appropriate braking before adding the feed. Keep enough stroke space for the counter drop-shot rather than reaching the ring with an uncontrolled final step.
