7-Ad Drill

Tennis Exercise Library

7-Ad Drill links two baseline side-step contacts with a diagonal approach into the ad-side service box. Original exercises 7.250–7.253.

7-Ad Drill: numbered agility-ring route with the athlete facing the net
Numbered ring route; the diagram shows the movement setup, not a video demonstration.

Setup And Route

Place three flat agility rings: ring 1 on the ad side of the baseline, ring 2 on the deuce side, and ring 3 in the ad service box. Begin at centre baseline facing the net. Side-step to ring 1 and plant the left foot; push off that foot and side-step to ring 2 for a right-foot contact. Push off and sprint diagonally to ring 3. Control the single-foot contact before changing direction.

Four Progressions

I — 7.250: no racquet or ball feed. Finish with a right-foot plant on hard court or a controlled right-foot lunge-slide on clay. II — 7.251: retain that route while carrying a racquet; no ball feed or stroke is prescribed.

III — 7.252: the coach feeds one ball toward ring 3; approach and play a counter drop-shot. On hard court, III–IV use the left-foot finish specified in the source; on clay they retain the right-foot lunge-slide. This differs from I–II’s right-foot hard-court finish. IV — 7.253: retain the ball-fed task and direct the counter drop-shot into a defined target.

Target Scoring

IV requires at least 30% of shots in the target and three bounces before the drop-shot passes the service line. Record target hits and total attempts, and record the bounce condition separately. These are drill criteria, not validated readiness thresholds. Use four cones for the ad target; the deuce source permits two to four. Keep target boundaries and feed conditions consistent.

Coaching Priorities

Place the contacting foot in the ring centre and push off from that foot. Establish the baseline route and surface-appropriate braking before adding the feed. Keep enough stroke space for the counter drop-shot rather than reaching the ring with an uncontrolled final step.
