A coach-led test of reaction and forward acceleration from baseline center toward a randomly dropped tennis ball.
Equipment
One tennis ball, stopwatch, tape measure, and scale if recording body mass.
How To Perform The Test
- The athlete starts at the center of the baseline on the same half of the court as the coach and faces the net.
- The coach stands at the service T and holds the tennis ball out to the side at 1.6 m above the court surface, measured with a tape.
- The coach drops the ball without a predictable cue and starts the stopwatch at the instant of release.
- The athlete reacts and catches the ball before its second bounce. Stop timing when the ball is caught.
Record And Interpret The Result
Record catch time in seconds and whether the ball was caught before its second bounce. Repeat with the same release height, coach position, court surface, and timing method. The book supplies no universal reaction-time pass/fail threshold.
Pre-Test Warm-Up
Use the three movements listed for this test in the tennis book: High Knee Pulls with Dorsi Flexion, Straight Leg Kicks, and SL RDL & Quad Stretch.
